MEET APRIL
Personal Trainer • Nutritional Practitioner • Health Coach
After more than 20 years in fitness, health, and wellness, I thought I understood what it took to stay strong. Then perimenopause brought me to one of the lowest points of my life. I gained more than 40 pounds, lost muscle, struggled with bone-deep fatigue, and felt increasingly disconnected from my body and myself.
I had always been the woman who could carry a lot. I pushed harder, took on more, and kept going. I thought that was resilience. I didn’t realize that years of chronic stress and constantly overriding what my body needed had created a load it could no longer carry.
I couldn’t change my body until I changed what my body was responding to.
Fitness is a stressor. Whether it makes you stronger or slowly tears you down depends on the total stress load you carry and your nervous system’s ability to move between stress and recovery. When the nervous system becomes dominated by stress responses, the recovery and adaptation required for growth can no longer keep pace. As hormones shift through perimenopause, that imbalance can become impossible to ignore. The workout meant to build you can become one more demand pushing you toward burnout.
That was my missing piece. I began training my body and nervous system together through intentional demand, recovery, and adaptation. As I rebuilt resilience, my body finally had the capacity to respond.
The weight came off. I rebuilt lean muscle, regained my energy, improved my sleep and insulin sensitivity, and changed the direction chronic stress had been taking my body. In my 50s, I became stronger, healthier, and more hopeful about how I was aging than I thought possible.
Stress no longer continuously tears me down. I have the capacity to recover and adapt so challenge can make me stronger.
What began as the hardest chapter of my life became one of its greatest gifts. Today, I’ve made it my mission to help other women build strong, fit bodies and resilient nervous systems because the strength, health, and freedom we want in the second half of life depend on the foundation we build now.
I truly believe our best years are still yet to come.
